PNWA Craft Workshop: Story, Structure, Subplot, Scene, Style: Keys to Rewriting Your Novel by Robert J. Ray
Thursday, February 11, 7 pm
The key to rewriting your novel is a workable plan: Story first, then Structure, Subplots,  (Key) Scenes, and Style. The toughest rewriting task is fixing your subplots. Before you can fix a subplot, you must peel it away from the novel, using tools like Character Arc, Character Grid, Scene List, Scene List, Scene Profile, Scene Template, and Core Story. Learn how to use these tools and make your rewrite hum in a hands-on workshop (with writing in the room) led by Robert J. Ray, using techniques from his latest book, The Weekend Novelist Rewrites the Novel.
Participants should bring a prose sample, two pages, double-spaced.

Life of the Book Nerd Meme

I’ve been Tagged on Facebook by Nicola of Alpha Heroes, but I thought i’d share on my blog.

Hello, my name is Ciara, and I’m a bookaholic.

1. What author do you own the most books by?
That would probably be JK Rowling, since Harry Potter has 7 books plus two skinny school books. Though I may have a box full of Nancy Drews in my parents garage….waiting for some distant time when I may or may not have a pre-teen daughter.

2. What book do you own the most copies of?
Peter Pan in all its different forms. I collect them. One original edition (my sweetie is the bestest!) A script of the play. A few beautifully illustrated editions. The Disney version and another picture book in Swedish. Can I count the audio versions?

3. What fictional character are you secretly in love with?
I am quite openly in love with Adam Hauptman from Patricia Briggs‘ Mercy Thompson series. I would also take Samuel (BABIES!!!).

4. What book have you read more than any other?
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. Fabulous book. I would name my future daughter Cimorene, if it weren’t so weird.

5. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
I think at that time I had just discovered Dealing with Dragons, otherwise it would have been Peter Pan.

6. What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year?
I don’t finish books that don’t keep me hooked. Too many books, too little time.

7. What is the best book you’ve read in the past year?
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Cried like a baby.

8. If you could tell everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be?
only one??? I guess The Time Traveler’s Wife.

9. What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read?
Define difficult. I hated reading books for English class. THE STRANGER by Camus was one of the worst books I’ve ever read. H.A.T.E.D. it. Also ANGELA’S ASHES, which I was forced to listen to on a very long family car ride from seattle to Yellowstone. It was torturous.
Nonfiction – one of my college economics textbooks.

10. Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
In literature? neither! Talk about depressing. When I was little my dad liked to read me Tolstoy. I was scarred for life. Now I only read happy books.

11. Shakespeare, Milton or Chaucer?
Shakespeare, as I haven’t read much by the other two. Though I had to memorize the opening of the Canterbury Tales in 8th grade and can still recite it for you. (but don’t ask me what I had for breakfast, I couldn’t tell you.)

img_023112. Austen or Eliot?
T.S. or George? I haven’t read any. I saw the Jane Austin movies – does that count?

13. What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
The classics. They’re boring and depressing and I can’t be bothered.

14. What is your favorite novel?
I can’t pick one. Off the top of my head: The Spymaster’s Lady, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Games of Command, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Sabriel

15. Play?
If I can count musicals, I’d go with Phantom of the Opera. The last straight play I watched was PERSUASION by Jane Austin at Book-it Theater.

16. Poem?
The Desiderata, author unknown

17. Essay?
No clue

18. Short Story?
“Thicker than Blood” by Meljean Brook in the FIRST BLOOD anthology

19. Non Fiction
Stitch N’ Bitch

20. Graphic Novel?
Elf Quest

Excited after purchasing DEMONICA book 2 (Shade's story). Currently reading book 3 (Wraith's story).

21. Science Fiction?
GAMES OF COMMAND by Linnea Sinclair

22. Who is your favorite writer?
Joanna Bourne

23. Who is the most over rated writer alive today?
I’m not going to answer this.

24. What are you reading right now?
PASSION UNLEASHED by Larissa Ione

25. Best Memoir?
BOY by Roald Dahl

26. Best History?
WILD SWANS by Jung Chang (it’s a memoir too)

CRY WOLF by Patricia Briggs

Title: Cry Wolf
Author: Patricia Briggs
Series: Alpha and Omega Book 1 (Prequel novella in ON THE PROWL)
Publication Info: Ace Books, July 2008
Genre: Urban Fantasy? Paranormal Romance? Not sure.
Rating: <3 <3 <3 <3

Patricia Briggs started her new series off with a bang in the novella “Alpha and Omega” from the anthology On the Prowl. (Read the novella first!) The first full length book, CRY WOLF, continues the story of Anna and Charles in a dynamic, action-packed, and thought-provoking way. Both main characters have the depth and complexity, vulnerabilities and strengths, and layered character arc that Ms. Briggs is famous for. Indeed, her characters, so real I feel I know them personally, are the reason I’m a squeeing fan girl. I just can’t get enough of her books.

Cry Wolf is set in the world of the Mercy Thompson series, where werewolves and fey and vampires are our next door neighbors, even if their existence is partially hidden from humans. Werewolf culture is center stage. While Mercy is an outsider (as a walker), Anna and Charles are both werewolves, allowing the reader greater access to the mysterious world ruled by the Marrok and the intricate pack politics. Bran, the Marrok, is a much larger character in this series, which I loved.

Anna was changed into a werewolf against her will three years ago by a Chicago Alpha bent on saving his psychotic mate. She was emotionally and physically abused in order to keep her under his thumb. She is a rare Omega, one who can bring peace and calm to the pack. Charles, the Marrok’s son, is an even rarer comodity: a natural born werewolf. He uses magic inherited from his Indian mother and his natural dominance to act as his father’s hitman. When he travels to Chicago to investigate the bad Alpha and met Anna, his wolf immediately recognized her as his mate. Cry Wolf begins immediately after the events of “Alpha and Omega.” Bran is transporting an injured Charles and his terrified PTSD mate back to headquarters in Montana. In Montana a rogue wolf is on the loose, killing hikers and bringing the authorities down on the pack. Charles and Anna brave the frozen wilderness to hunt down the killer. They must learn to trust each other, and themselves, to overcome the black magic that threatens their world.

Charles and Anna’s relationship is an unfolding story of healing and trust. Usually in werewolves, the humans will bond first and their inner-wolves will follow later. But for Anna and Charles, their wolves bonded first, and their humans have a harder time. Ms. Briggs treats Anna’s history of sexual abuse with the serious psychologic consequences it deserves. She is not “cured” through great sex or a moment of intuition, thank goodness. Her growth is natural, her struggles real. Anna’s character arc is truly beautiful to behold. Charles is a wonderful hero, patient, protective, sexy. Watching the two of them bloom is a treasure.

Action, action, action for you Urban Fantasy fans. Violence, death. Whatnot. My favorite part was following Anna’s healing process and her growing self awareness. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

What's Your Poison?

A non-romance-reading friend recently asked me for paranormal romance recommendations. Of course I jumped at the chance to pimp books, but the pressure is hot. The mission, should I chose to accept it (and I did): She needs to be completely sucked in and addicted for life. It’s imperative. (Especially if I’m moving to Portland! I want her to join the Cheeky Pages Romance Book Group at Powell’s with me and attend all the Romance author signings in Cedar Hill Crossing.)

I wrote up a list of recommendations and started filling a box of books for her. Mr. Wonderful called me crazy, said I was going to scare her, and told me to tone it down, so I sent him to Portland with only 7 books from my shelves to tempt her to the dark side. Her reading tastes have been everywhere from chick lit to horror. My goal was to give her a wide cross-section so that she would have a better chance of finding her poison of choice. Does she prefer light or dark paranormals? High Fantasy or Urban Fantasy? Hot or sweet? Irreverent or serious? Here are the books I sent her, and my thoughts on the series to recommend NEXT if that book hits the spot, from DARK to LIGHT:

  1. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Next – Patricia Briggs‘ Mercy Thompson series, Ilona Andrews‘ Kate Daniels series
  2. Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione
    Next – J.R. Ward‘s Black Dagger Brotherhood
  3. Fantasy Lover, Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Next – Gena Showalter‘s Lord of the Underworld series
  4. Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson
Next – Meljean Brook‘s Guardian Series
  5. No Rest for the Wicked, Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole (I temporarily misplaced book 1. :0) Next – Nalini Singh‘s Psy/Changelings
  6. You Slay Me (book 1), Aisling Grey, Guardian series by Katie MacAlister
Next – Stephanie Rowe’s Goblet of Eternal Youth series
  7. Bit the Jackpot, Vegas Vampires series by Erin McCarthy
Next - Lyndsay Sands‘ Argeneau Vampire Series

I don’t own the first book in Nalini or Meljean’s series, otherwise I would have sent them. (I hope to get autographed copies for my forever shelf soon!) Would have sent Dark Lover and Moon Called, but my copies are already on loan to other friends.

What books would you recommend to a Paranormal Romance virgin? What books are out-of-this world that are guaranteed to get my friend addicted?

EDITED TO ADD: She’s starting with BITTEN!!

Happy Birthday to ME!

THANK YOU SO MUCH MELJEAN!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Last night I found the best present ever in my mailbox: An ARC of DEMON BOUND by Meljean Brook!!! The book is available for pre-order on Amazon, to be released November 4. Am I lucky or what?

Synopsis DEMON BOUND:

Among the Guardians, Alice Grey is known as the Black Widow—a woman trapped in a web spun by the demon Teqon. To save her soul, she agreed to deliver to Teqon the heart of the oldest and most powerful Guardian of all, or else be damned for eternity. After more than a hundred years, Teqon is calling in his debt.

Jake Hawkins is a novice Guardian whose gift of teleportation could be invaluable to Alice in determining her next move. But in aligning himself with her he never expected to fall in love. Now, their passionate flight to escape Alice’s damnable bargain is threatening both their souls. For they’re about to discover a hellish secret about the Guardians—something that will change their universe forever.

I LURVE Meljean’s Guardian series. It is one of my favorite paranormal romance series of all time and I recommend it to everyone. Fascinating mythology and characters that jump right off the page. I jumped on Ethan McCabe (DEMON NIGHT) first for my Desert Island Keeper Hut, followed by Hugh Castleford (DEMON ANGEL). In total six of her characters will be on the Island. That’s some strong book love!

The Guardian Series (which really should be read in order):

  1. FALLING FOR ANTHONY (in the anthology Hot Spell)
  2. DEMON ANGEL
  3. PARADISE (in the anthology Wild Thing)
  4. DEMON MOON
  5. DEMON NIGHT
  6. THICKER THAN BLOOD (in the anthology First Blood) – 8/08
  7. DEMON BOUNDTo Be Released 11/08!

I’ve read all the books that have been released. Demon Angel and Demon Moon are probably my favorite, but the hero I would personally like as my very own is Ethan from Demon Night. Lilith and Savitri Murray are high up on my list of favorite heroines of all time too.

In addition, to top off the best birthday ever, some of my dear blogging friends have offered to let me borrow their ARCs after which I lust: HOSTAGE TO PLEASURE (Psy-Chagelings book 5) by Nalini Singh and CRY WOLF (Alpha and Omega book 1) by Patricia Briggs!!! I am eagerly awaiting their arrival in the mail. These are two of my very favorite authors. :) Luv, true luv. Thank you!!!

I am in book heaven. However will next year compete?

Werewolves are my Weakness

A Vampire, a Werewolf and a Demon walk into a bar…

Vampires might have established the paranormal genre, but werewolves are the heroes closest to my heart. Last night, as I cuddled up in bed with a stack of books trying to ease my anticipation for Patricia Briggs’ upcoming CRY WOLF, I realized that I am very definitely on a werewolf kick. It might be my childhood fascination with Elf Quest Graphic Novels. It might be the Little Red Ridinghood inside us all. Whatever it is, Werewolf heroes have captured my imagination in a way that Vampires, those soulless tortured loners, have failed to do.

“Like most animals, werewolves spend a large part of their lives engaged in the three Fs of basic survival: feeding, fighting and…reproduction.” – Elena Michaels, werewolf heroine of BITTEN by Kelley Armstrong

Why I love Werewolves and wolf Shape-shifters:

  1. Pack means family.
Unlike their undead breathren, Werewolves are fiercely loyal to the pack. The pack, whether built through Turning or through biology, is everything: family, friendship, leader, world. The werewolf hero has brothers who have his back through any fight, and when he finds his heroine that loyalty is extended to her.
  2. Wolves mate for life.
Finding a mate is one of the most important events of a werewolf’s life. He will brave hell and high water to protect his mate, unleashing his savage beast to fight for love.
  3. Body language and pack dynamics.
I find the integration of wolf body language fascinating. Werewolf characters take on the complex political dynamics of real wolf packs, demonstrating dominance and submissiveness and deference to the alpha. Patricia Briggs is the best at weaving in complex pack hierarchy through body language.

Werewolf books on my shelves (first in series):

1. MOON CALLED by Patricia Briggs (Book 1: Mercy Thompson series) Have I talked about this series enough? Cuz I lurve it like a vamp loves blood.

Mercy Thompson’s life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn’t exactly normal herself.

2. “Alpha and Omega” Novella by Patricia Briggs in anthology ON THE PROWL (Prequel: Alpha and Omega series) CRY WOLF to be realeased July 29!!!

These all-new paranormal romances from today’s hottest authors feature a female werewolf who comes into her own; a Lord who crosses paths with a fiery mage; a mixed-blood Child of the Moon who faces an uncertain future; and a woman whose sixth sense proves to be a dangerous talent.

3. BITTEN by Kelly Armstrong (Book 1: Women of the Otherworld series)

Young, beautiful, and successful, Elena Michaels seems to have it all. Her happy, organized life follows a predictable pattern: filing stories for her job as a journalist, working out at the gym, living with her architect boyfriend, and lunching with her girlfriends from the office. And once a week, in the dead of night, she streaks through a downtown ravine, naked and furred, tearing at the throats of her animal prey.

Elena Michaels is a werewolf.

The man who made her one has been left behind, but his dark legacy has not. And though Elena struggles to maintain the normal life she’s worked so hard to create, she cannot resist the call of the elite pack of werewolves from her past. Her feral instincts will lead her back to them and into a desperate war for survival that will test her own understanding of who, and what, she is.

4. FULL MOON RISING by Keri Arthur (Book 1: Riley Jensen series)

A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming.…

Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.

In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.

5. HEART OF THE WOLF by Terry Spears

Their forbidden love may get them both killed

Bella is a red werewolf, sole survivor of the fire that killed her entire pack. Forced to flee her adopted gray pack when the alpha male becomes a vicious threat, she struggles to live as a lone wolf, until Devlyn, the gray male who rescued her as a pup, comes to bring her home. His passion for her wont be denied, but hes a beta, doomed to fight to the death if he so much as touches the alphas choice of mate.
When a local red werewolf goes on a killing spree, Bella and Devlyn must flee the murderer, the police and their vengeful pack leader. But with the full moon rising, and her heat upon her, Bella cant resist the pull to her destined mate
A sizzling paranormal romance based in extensive research on how wolves live and behave in the wild, creating a fascinating world of nature and fantasy

6. TEMPTING DANGER by Eileen Wilks (Book 1: World of the Lupi)

Lily Yu is a San Diego police detective investigating a series of grisly murders that appear to be the work of a werewolf. To hunt down the killer, she must infiltrate the clans. Only one man can help her – a werewolf named Rule Turner, a prince of the lupi, whose charismatic presence disturbs Lily. Rule has his own reasons for helping the investigation – reasons he doesn’t want to share with Lily. Logic and honor demand she keep her distance, but the attraction between them is immediate, devastating, and beyond human reason. Now, in a race to fend off evil, Lily finds herself in uncharted territory, tested as never before, and at her back a man who she’s not sure she can trust.

7. WOLF AT THE DOOR by Christine Warren (Book 1: The Others)

Sullivan Quinn didn’t travel 3,000 miles from his native Ireland and his wolf pack just to chase rabidly after the most delectable quarry he’s ever seen. Quinn is in America on a mission—to warn his Other brethren of a shadowy group willing to use murder and mayhem to bring them down. But one whiff of this Foxwoman’s delicious honeysuckle fragrance and he knows that she is more than a colleague or a conquest…she is his mate.

Anthropologist Cassidy Poe is a world-renowned authority on social interaction, but the overpowering desire she feels around Quinn defies every ounce of her expertise. Working by his side to uncover The Others’ enemies poses risks she never expected—to her own safety, to those she loves, and to her heart, as every encounter with Quinn proves more blissfully erotic than the last…

Now, with no one to trust but each other, Quinn and Cassidy face a foe that’s edging closer every day, threatening to destroy the life they’ve always known, and the passion they’ve just discovered…

8. A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER by Kresley Cole (Book 1: Immortals after Dark)

A mythic warrior who’ll stop at nothing to possess her . . .

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he’s waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy . . .

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents — until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae — and their notorious dark desires — ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire . . .

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

9. CARESSED BY ICE by Nalini Singh (Book 3: Psy-Changelings)

Brenna, a she-wolf Psy, was abducted by a serial killer-and returned a monster. The only person who can help her is Judd, a telekinetic and Council defector. But the passion burning between them could push them both over the edge of sanity

10. BLUE MOON by Lori Handeland (Book 1: Nightcreatures series)

Miniwa, Wisconsin is under siege, but not by the usual summer tourists. The area’s normally shy wolf population has begun stalking human prey, and their victims have been disappearing…or worse. Something is happening in the woods. Something brutal and primitive…

Officer Jessie McQuade has seen plenty in her years on the force-but nothing as intriguing as the gorgeous, naked man she encounters while tracking a rogue wolf. Professor Will Cadotte is a Native American activist. He’s also the only man capable of distracting Jessie from her work. And for a cop, distraction-no matter how pleasurable-can be deadly. It’s against Jessie’s better judgment to accept Will’s help in her investigation, yet she soon finds herself doing exactly that-and more. Will’s dark, penetrating eyes see into a part of Jessie’s soul she never knew existed. It’s exhilarating…and terrifying.
Now, as a town’s deepest secrets come to light, no one is safe: not friends, lovers, or strangers. And as Jessie follows a bloody trail to the shocking truth, she’ll have to decide who she can trust when the moon is full…

11. KITTY AND THE MIDNIGHT HOUR by Carrie Vaughn (Book 1: Kitty Norville)

Kitty Norville is a midnight-shift DJ for a Denver radio station’and a werewolf in the closet. Her new late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged is a raging success, but it’s Kitty who can use some help. So glad I still have the anthology ON THE PROWL in my bookshelf, cuz the excerpt made me want to go back and reread the beginning of Anna and Charles story in “Alpha and Omega.” Why, oh why do I have to wait until August for the book to come out? :(

I’d do almost anything for an ARC. :D

If you haven’t yet delved into Ms. Briggs werewolf world, do it!

Mercy Thompson
Book 1: Moon Called
Book 2: Blood Bound
Book 3: Iron Kissed
Book 4: Bone Crossed (coming JANUARY 2009!)

Anna and Charles
Book 1: “Alpha and Omego” novella in On the Prowl Anthology
Book 2: Cry Wolf (coming AUGUST 2008!)

PS I dreamed last night that I was babysitting for Julia Quinn and I was so nervous that I actually got to talk to her about her books. I am a dork.

Welcome!

While you wait for Lover Enshrined to come out, here are 13 other book recommendations for Black Dagger Brotherhood crack addicts.

There is a difference between Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy: Paranormal Romance must have a main love story with a satisfying Happily-Ever-After for the hero and heroine. Urban Fantasy does not. BDB falls in the former, so I have NOT included Urban Fantasy in this list (even thought Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is teh awesome). The recommendations all contain the things we love about BDB: Alpha heroes, love-true-love, and fabulous world building.

Rec’s for BDB Addicts:

  1. Guardian series by Meljean Brook
  2. Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole
  3. Midnight Desire by Emma Holly
  4. On the Prowl anthology by Patricia Briggs, Eileen Wilks, and Karen Chance
  5. Hot Spell anthology by Emma Holly, Shiloh Walker, and Meljean Brook
  6. Dirk & Steele series by Marjorie M. Liu
  7. Tairen Soul series by C.L. Wilson
  8. Darkness Chosen series by Christina Dodd
  9. Midnight Breeds series by Lara Adrian
  10. Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon
  11. Paladins of Darkness series by Alexis Morgan
  12. Nightwalker series by Jacqueline Franks
  13. Psy-Changelings series by Nalini Singh (which I haven’t read but have heard great things)
